Focusing on your to-do list is not the key to becoming more productive. You’ve got to connect to yourself to understand how to make the best use of your time.

Success.

Everybody has a different definition of what success means to them.

Take my client, Andrey, as an example.

For him, the completion of a townhouse redevelopment that has a projected profit of $300,000 equals success.

So too is the personal and spiritual growth he’s achieved since working with The Kaizen Way. Andrey has more confidence in himself than he’s ever had before and he’s now focused on achieving the best for himself and his family.

The fact is that your definition of success may differ from Andrey’s.

But whatever your definition may be, know that there is one common factor that leads to success…

High-level productivity.

You see, high performers, regardless of their field or definition of success, are productivity masters. They can push beyond their comfort zones and understand that success comes from determining which direction they want to go in and sticking to it.

They connect to the success they hope to achieve.

You need to do the same.

I’m going to share two questions that will help you form this connection so you can become a productivity master.

But first, let’s examine what it really means to be productive.

Bringing More of Yourself, Your Attention, and Your Emotions into the Day

So many people judge their productivity based on their ability to work through their daily to-do lists.

If you’re able to complete all of your tasks, you are productive.

If you can’t, then you aren’t.

But I believe that this is a low-level way to look at productivity. Ticking things off your to-do list doesn’t help you achieve mastery in productivity.

You need to look at things from a higher level.

And to do that, you need to ask yourself one crucial question about the journey you’re on…

Do you really feel it?

The highly successful get that way because they have a true connection to what they’re trying to achieve. They bring a little bit of their heart and soul into everything that they do. And, every day, they bring their full attention and emotions into any task that they face.

It’s this connection that is the true fuel for productivity.

Your heart and soul have to connect with what you’re doing every single day. If it doesn’t, then it won’t matter how much stuff you tick off your to-do list…

You won’t feel productive because you aren’t truly connected to what you’re doing.

The Two Questions That Lead to Productivity Mastery

We can see how important connection to yourself and what you’re doing is when it comes to productivity. Now, you need to know how to build on that connection.

What can you do to reach that higher level?

I have two questions that will help you find the answer.

Question #1 – What Have You Been Productive Towards in the Last Six Weeks?

About four years ago, I looked at myself and thought I was super productive.

After all, I worked really hard, serving at several training events all over Australia. I was constantly on the road, handling multiple property deals at once, and coaching clients. And I put my all into ensuring that I served everybody I worked with to the best of my ability.

But eventually, I stopped to reflect on where all of this work was taking me.

I was proud of doing as much as I had. But I also knew that I didn’t want to be stuck in the same schedule I had for the next five years.

That’s when I asked myself the question…

What have you been productive towards in the last six weeks?

This question led to me examining every single task I’d completed over that period.

But the goal here wasn’t to pat myself on the back because of how much work I’d done. It was to help me identify which of those tasks had moved me closer to where I wanted to be.

What had I done that may actually fall on a future horizon line?

This is a difficult question to answer…

It still is for me to this day.

But it’s a question I ask myself every month because it allows me to check in with myself.

It’s with this question that you start to see just how many tasks you’re completing that don’t do anything to move you towards your ideal future.

And it’s this question that helps you focus on the stuff that you really connect with.

Question #2 – What Major Projects Are You Working on Right Now?

Imagine we’ve met up to have a coffee together.

We start talking about life and business. And eventually, I hit you with this question:

What major projects are you working on right now?

What would you tell me?

Would you be able to reel off a list of big projects that you feel connected to? And would you be able to tell me which of those projects took priority? Also, what were you doing to make sure they each came to fruition?

Here’s the thing…

What I’m looking for in an answer to this question is to see that everything you’re doing aligns with your goals.

Your major projects are the big goals you have for yourself in the future.

By getting clear on what those projects are, you can align your major milestones and outcomes to them. You can measure up the tasks you’re spending time on against the outcomes and projects that are most important to you.

And in doing so, you can create buckets of tasks that bring those projects to completion faster.

Plus, you can release the tasks that do not lead to the completion of an important project.

Become a Productivity Master

Mastering productivity is not about how much you can do.

Rather, it’s about what you do and how this serves the goals that you’ve set for yourself.

As you’ve seen in Andrey’s story, people have different definitions of success. But no matter what it is, know that productivity plays a key role in attaining it.

The purpose of the questions I’ve shared is to provide you with some clarity on the future that you want to create. By asking these questions, you will see what you want to achieve and what you’ve been doing over the last few weeks to make your ideal future a reality.

Checking boxes on a to-do list does not make you productive.

Working on the things that you connect with on a deeper level is the key to long-term success.
